Sunset Workshop

About

It takes the Earth 24 hours to spin once. Throughout the day, the Sun appears to slowly move across the sky, seeming to barely move at all.

In this workshop, we'll go up to the best sunset spot in Montréal and watch as the Sun goes below the horizon. As we watch the sun go "down", what we're really watching is the rotation of the Earth in real-time, revealing how quickly our planet is rotating all day long.

What You Will Learn

• how to notice the rotation of the Earth in real-time
• why the Moon and the planets move along the same path the Sun does in the sky
• why we receive more sunlight in the summer and less in the winter
• how the solstices and equinoxes work
• why the the Sun sets in different locations through the year
• the different stages of a sunset
• how to use several free smartphone astronomy apps:
  • Star Walk 2 (iOS / Android)
  • Solar Walk Lite (iOS / Android)

WEATHER

• If it's threatening rain, we're NO GO
• If it's cloudy, but we can still be outside and learn, we are GO
• If there's no clouds at all, we are GO

What to Bring

• Smartphone to take photos (make sure it's charged and has free space!)
• Sweater, warm jacket (it gets chilly when the Sun goes down)
• Comfortable walking shoes (we'll be walking up pavement and a gravel trail)
• Water
